At the present time, trains in Britain (become) smoother, safer, more reliable, and a little faster. The process (take) place gradually, but by 2012, trains everywhere in Britain (undergo) these changes. They (also be) , in the opinion of many, especially those of a nostalgic temperament, more boring. Trains (be) inherently more romantic than other forms of transport and (attract) the interest of dramatists, musicians, and poets. And it was the characteristic rhythm of trains - the clickety-clack - which (provide) the inspiration for poems by T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, and other poets in the twentieth century. It is this rhythm which (now disappear) from British trains, as it (already disappear) from high-speed trains in the rest of Europe. Let me explain. The rhythm is the result of the tracks which used (find) all over Britain. These are about twenty metres in length and are joined by bolted connecting plates, leaving room for expansion and contraction in heat and cold. They (replace) by 100-metre long sections which do not change in length as the temperature changes - they (change) vertically instead. As a result, there is no need for gaps and connecting plates between them. And as a further result... no more clickety-clack.
